“Lomi lomi” means “to rub” in Hawaiian and reflects the broad, fluid movements performed with the therapist’s fingers, thumbs, palms, arms, and elbows.

The macadamia, palm, and coconut oils are generally used as moisturizers in Lomi Lomi massages, to keep the movements smooth and to nourish the skin.

Many believe that the healing art of Lomi Lomi was brought to Hawaii by the early Polynesian settlers, while others believe it is deeply rooted in the practice of “living aloha”— a legacy of ancient Hawaii and the mystical land of Mu.

The Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage can also be called Kahuna massage.
