A Lomi Lomi Massage is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique that combines physical touch with spiritual and emotional healing. It is often referred to as “the loving hands massage” because of its gentle and nurturing approach.
The early Polynesian settlers brought their own form of massage to Hawai’i and Hawaiian lomilomi evolved their own unique Hawaiian style.
The word used traditionally, called Lomi, means “to knead, to rub, or soothe, to work in and out, as the paws of a contented cat.
” It may also mean “to take and turn, to shift” as in “the sacred shift within you that is inspired by the healing kahuna…” said twice “lomilomi” for emphasis.
Key features of a lomi lomi massage include the use of the practitioner’s hands, forearms, and elbows to apply long, flowing strokes to the body. These strokes are designed to mimic the ebb and flow of ocean waves, promoting relaxation and a sense of harmony. The therapist may also use their intuition and intention to address not only physical tension but also emotional and spiritual blockages.
Lomi Lomi Massage is deeply rooted in Hawaiian culture and spirituality. It honors the idea that the body and mind are interconnected, and healing one can lead to healing the other. The practice often incorporates Hawaiian music, chanting, and the use of essential oils to enhance the overall experience.
